French Onion Chicken

An Easy, Cheesy Comfort Food Dinner

Some nights, you just need a dinner that’s easy to throw together, tastes delicious, and doesn’t require a sink full of dishes afterward. 😂

Enter French Onion Chicken!

This recipe combines tender chicken breasts, savory French onion soup, creamy sour cream (or French onion dip if you’re feeling a little extra!), crunchy seasoned croutons, and melted provolone cheese.

It’s one of those meals that feels a little fancy without requiring a whole lot of effort. And honestly, those are some of my favorite recipes.

The best part? You can get everything assembled in one baking dish and let the oven do most of the work.

French Onion Chicken Recipe

Prep Time: Approximately 15 minutes
Cook Time: Approximately 40–45 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 cans (10.5 oz each) French onion soup
  • 1 cup sour cream or greek yogurt (or French onion dip for an extra boost of flavor!)
  • 1 bag seasoned croutons, crushed
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • Italian seasoning, to taste (or fresh herbs if you have them)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Spray your pan with cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the chicken. Pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness to help them cook more evenly.
  3. Add the soup. Pour both cans of French onion soup into the bottom of a large baking dish.
  4. Layer the chicken. Place the chicken breasts directly into the soup.
  5. Make it creamy. Spread the sour cream/greek yogurt or French onion dip evenly over the tops of the chicken breasts.
  6. Add the crunch. Crush the seasoned croutons right in their bag (because who needs another dirty dish?) and sprinkle them over the chicken.
  7. Bring on the cheese! Lay the provolone slices over the top, then sprinkle with Italian seasoning or fresh herbs.
  8. Bake. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for approximately 30 minutes.
  9. Finish uncovered. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 10–15 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F and the cheese is bubbly.
  10. Serve and enjoy! Spoon some of that delicious French onion sauce over your chicken and favorite side dish.

Cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of your chicken breasts. Always check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer.

What I Served With It

I served ours over rice, and it was a great combination!

The rice was perfect for soaking up all that French onion flavor and creamy sauce. Plus, it’s an easy side dish when you’re trying to get supper on the table without making things complicated.

A Couple of Ideas for Next Time…

You know me—I’m already thinking about how I can change things up the next time I make this. 😂

Idea #1: Swap the croutons for stuffing mix.

I think seasoned stuffing mix could add a really delicious flavor and texture. I’m curious whether it would soak up some of that French onion goodness and turn into more of a casserole-style topping.

Idea #2: Cook the rice right in the French onion soup.

Instead of preparing the rice separately, I’d love to try adding it directly to the baking dish so it absorbs all that flavor while everything cooks.

I haven’t tested either variation yet, so stay tuned!

Let’s Talk!

Have you ever made something similar to this French Onion Chicken?

Would you try it with seasoned croutons, swap them for stuffing mix, or experiment with cooking rice or even potatoes right in the dish?

Let me know what you’d try! I love hearing how other people put their own spin on recipes.

Until next time, keep finding the simple joys in everyday life. 🌻
